Crowns

Dental crowns are custom-made caps that completely cover a damaged or weakened tooth. They restore strength, function, and appearance, making your tooth look and feel like new.

What Are They?

The crown of a tooth is the visible part above the gum line. An artificial crown replaces this section, fully encasing the existing tooth to protect it and restore its shape.

Crowns can be made from:

  • Metal
  • Porcelain
  • Porcelain fused to metal (for strength and natural appearance)

What Will My Dentist Do?

  • Shape the tooth to make room for the crown, ensuring it fits and functions like a natural tooth.
  • If necessary, build up the tooth with a filling if it’s badly damaged or has had root canal treatment.
  • Take detailed impressions (moulds) of your tooth and surrounding teeth using a soft, pliable material.
  • Use a thin cord to gently move the gum away for precise impressions around the edge of the tooth.
  • Place a temporary crown made of plastic or metal to protect your tooth while the final crown is being made in a dental lab.
  • Fit the final crown at a later appointment, checking the bite and comfort before permanently bonding it in place.

What Are the Benefits?

  • Strong and long-lasting, with proper care.
  • Restores the shape, function, and appearance of a damaged tooth.
  • Can be matched in color and size to your natural teeth.
  • Improves the appearance of misshapen or discoloured teeth.

A well-made crown can last for many years and is a reliable solution for protecting and enhancing your smile.
