Fixed Bridges

Fixed bridges are a reliable solution for replacing one or more missing teeth by anchoring a replacement tooth to the natural teeth adjacent to the gap.

What Are They?

A dental bridge secures a replacement tooth (or multiple teeth) to the adjacent natural teeth. Types of bridges include:

  • Bridges with crowns on each end
  • Bridges bonded to the surface of adjacent teeth
  • Bridges fixed to only one neighboring tooth

They are typically made from porcelain fused with metal, or sometimes entirely from porcelain.

What Will My Dentist Do?

Bridge placement involves several stages:

  • Taking impressions of your mouth using a soft, mouldable material
  • Creating plaster models of your teeth and gums to assess your bite
  • Preparing the supporting teeth to receive the bridge fixings
  • Taking a second impression to craft a custom-fit bridge
  • Fitting a temporary bridge or crown while the permanent one is made
  • Checking and adjusting the fit at your final appointment before permanently fixing the bridge

Your dentist or hygienist will also show you how to care for your new bridge properly.

What Are the Benefits?

  • Restores appearance, chewing, and speaking functions
  • Natural-looking results with color-matched teeth
  • Helps prevent surrounding teeth from shifting or wearing down
  • Long-lasting with proper care and maintenance

If you're not suitable for a fixed bridge, your dentist may suggest a removable partial denture. In cases of weak support teeth or recent extractions, a denture might be fitted first and replaced with a bridge later.
