Mouth Cancer

Mouth cancer is a serious condition that can affect any area of the mouth. Early detection is critical for successful treatment.

What Is It?

Mouth cancer is a dangerous abnormal growth that can appear anywhere in the mouth, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, or throat.

What Are the Signs?

  • An ulcer that doesn’t heal after two weeks (often painless)
  • A lump or swelling lasting more than two weeks
  • A white or red patch inside the mouth

These symptoms don’t always mean cancer, but they should always be checked by your dentist promptly.

Am I at Risk?

  • Smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Combination of smoking and drinking increases risk further
  • Prolonged exposure to sunlight (lip and skin cancer)
  • Aged over 40, though younger people can be affected
  • Poor diet lacking fruits and vegetables

How Can It Be Detected?

Your dentist can detect early signs of mouth cancer. Early diagnosis greatly increases the chances of successful treatment.

What Will My Dentist Do?

  • Check your face and neck for signs or lumps
  • Feel under your jaw and along your neck
  • Examine inside your mouth, including cheeks, lips, tongue, and throat

If anything suspicious is found, your dentist may monitor it or refer you to a specialist.

Why Are Regular Checks Important?

Routine dental checkups help detect problems early — including signs of mouth cancer — when treatment is most effective.

How Can I Prevent Mouth Cancer?

  • Eat 5–7 portions of fruits and vegetables daily
  • Avoid all tobacco products
  • Drink alcohol in moderation (no more than 14 units/week for women, 21 for men)
