Gum Disease (Periodontal Treatment)

Gum disease is a common oral health issue that starts with plaque buildup and can progress to serious damage if untreated. Our periodontal treatments help restore your gum health and prevent tooth loss.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease begins when plaque—a sticky film of bacteria—builds up on your teeth. If not removed, plaque hardens into tartar and causes inflammation of the gums, known as gingivitis. Without treatment, this can progress to periodontitis, where the gums pull away from the teeth and supporting bone is lost.

Stages of Gum Disease

  • Gingivitis: Gums appear red, swollen, and may bleed when brushing. This stage is reversible with good hygiene.
  • Periodontitis: Gums begin detaching from the teeth, forming pockets that trap plaque. Bone loss can occur, leading to loose teeth and potential tooth loss.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Gums pulling away from the teeth
  • Pus between gums and teeth
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste
  • Loose or shifting permanent teeth

How Is It Treated?

  • Professional cleaning (scaling and polishing): Removes plaque and tartar.
  • Good oral hygiene at home: Brushing twice daily, flossing, and using dentist-recommended mouthwash.
  • Root planing: Deep cleaning below the gumline to remove bacteria from infected pockets.
  • Surgery: In advanced cases, gums may be lifted to clean affected areas thoroughly.
  • Tooth removal: If the disease is too advanced and the tooth cannot be saved.

Who's at Risk?

  • People with crooked or crowded teeth (harder to clean)
  • Smokers—smoking severely worsens gum disease
  • Those with diabetes or weakened immune systems
  • People taking certain medications—ask your dentist
  • Hormonal changes (pregnancy, birth control pills) can increase risk

Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables also helps your gums stay healthy.
