Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment is a procedure used to treat damage or infection within the pulp of a tooth. It can save a tooth from being extracted, relieving pain and preventing further complications.
What Is Root Canal Treatment?
Each tooth has a core of soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. If the pulp is damaged or infected, the tooth can become painful and may need treatment. Root canal therapy removes the damaged pulp and fills the empty space to restore the tooth’s function.
What Will My Dentist Do?
- X-ray: An x-ray helps the dentist see the shape and number of the root canals and check for signs of infection in the surrounding bone.
- Rubber Dam: A thin rubber sheet is placed around the tooth to keep it dry during treatment, which also makes the procedure more comfortable.
- Local Anaesthetic: The area will be numbed to ensure you're comfortable throughout the procedure.
- Removal of Pulp: The dentist will make an opening in the tooth and use small instruments to remove the infected pulp from the core and root canals.
- Temporary Filling: If necessary, a temporary filling will be placed, and antibiotics may be prescribed if there’s an infection.
- Final Filling: Once the area is cleaned and infection is resolved, the dentist fills the root canals and seals the tooth. In some cases, a crown may be placed for added support.
What Are the Benefits?
- Pain Relief: Root canal treatment often relieves the toothache immediately once the infected pulp is removed.
- Prevents Tooth Extraction: A root-filled tooth is saved from extraction and can last for many years.
- Prevents Infection Spread: By cleaning and filling the root canal, it prevents infection from spreading to surrounding tissues.
- Long-lasting Results: Root fillings are typically successful and durable, although retreatment may be needed if an infection recurs.
- Post-Treatment Options: If needed, an apicectomy (removal of part of the root) can be performed to remove infection and ensure the treatment’s success.
