Scale and Polishing Resource
Scale and Polishing
Scaling and polishing are essential dental treatments that remove plaque, tartar, and stains, helping keep your teeth and gums healthy. These treatments can prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.
What Is Scale and Polishing?
Plaque is a sticky substance made up of bacteria that forms on your teeth. If left untreated, it can cause tooth decay and gum disease. Tartar (or calculus) is hardened plaque that can only be removed by a dentist or hygienist using special instruments. Scaling removes tartar, while polishing removes stains and makes it harder for plaque to stick to your teeth.
What Happens During the Procedure?
- Scaling Instruments: Dentists and hygienists use hand scalers (metal scrapers) or electric scalers (vibrating tips in water) to remove plaque and tartar. They may change instruments frequently to reach different areas of the teeth.
- Polishing: After scaling, a rotating brush or rubber polisher with special toothpaste is used to polish your teeth, removing stains and making it harder for plaque to accumulate.
- Root Planing: If you have gum disease, deeper cleaning may be required, which involves cleaning below the gumline and around the roots of the teeth. This is called 'root planing,' and a local anaesthetic may be used.
- Home Care Advice: Your dentist or hygienist will provide guidance on the best methods for cleaning your teeth and gums thoroughly at home.
What Are the Benefits?
- Healthier Teeth and Gums: Regular scaling and polishing make it easier for you to keep your teeth clean at home and improve the health of your gums.
- Prevent Gum Disease: If your gums bleed when brushing, it may indicate early gum disease. Regular scaling helps stop the disease from worsening and improves at-home cleaning.
- Fresh Breath: Gum disease is a common cause of bad breath. Regular scaling, combined with proper home care, helps prevent this issue.
- Prevention of Tooth Decay: By removing plaque and tartar, scaling prevents tooth decay and other dental problems.
